Office Organization

The Lieutenant Governor is the second-highest executive office in Illinois and first in the line of succession to the Governor. The Lieutenant Governor exercises the powers delegated to them by the Governor and those prescribed by law, including service as the state’s top advocate for rural communities, military families, river conservation, and the needs of Illinois’ women and girls. Under the Illinois Constitution, the Lieutenant Governor becomes the Acting Governor if the Governor is unable to fulfill the office's duties.
