Menopause Legislation in Illinois
Illinois as a Leader in Menopause Care
2026 Legislative Session
SB 3325
Effective January 1, 2027
This bill creates an incentive for practitioners who treat perimenopausal and menopausal women to learn more about menopause by counting a course on menopause towards the 1-hr implicit bias training requirement.
This will help address a gap in care for menopausal women, especially Black and Hispanic women who are more likely to have harsher symptoms while also being less likely to be properly diagnosed and treated.
Illinois is the first state in the nation to create this type of incentive for menopause education and awareness among healthcare professionals.
The bill passed with unanimous support.
HB 5284 (Illinois Menopause Equity and Care Act)
Effective January 1, 2028
Amends the Illinois Insurance Code to include care for perimenopausal conditions or symptoms. Coverage includes medication for menopause-related osteoporosis and non-hormonal therapies for vasomotor symptoms.
Instructs Illinois Department of Health (IDPH) to create educational resources on menopause.
Amends the Illinois Human Rights Act to change definition of pregnancy to include “menopause related conditions.” Outlines reasonable workplace accommodations, including: temperature or climate adjusted workspaces, flexible schedules or modified hours.
SB 3688
Effective January 1, 2027
Amends the Medical School Curriculum Act to require each medical school in Illinois to include the study of menopause and perimenopause
Amends the Nurse Practice Act and the Physician Assistant Practice Act of 1987 to include study of menopause and perimenopause in LPN, RN, and PA curricula.
HB 4834
Effective January 1, 2027
Removes testosterone, estrogen, mifepristone, misoprostol, and gonadotropin releasing hormones (GnrH) analogues from the list of controlled substances required to be reported through the Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program. The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) must purge all existing records in the Prescription Monitoring Program concerning the prescribing or dispensing of testosterone by January 1, 2027.
Bill strengthens privacy protections for transgender patients and patients receiving a medical abortion or managing a miscarriage. Testosterone and estrogen can be used to treat menopause symptoms as well.
HB 5492
Effective January 1, 2028
Requires insurance policies regulated by the State to cover up to a six-month supply of prescription hormone therapy when a health care provider or pharmacist decides such a supply is clinically appropriate for a patient. The bill does not change a physician or pharmacist’s scope of practice as they already have the authority to dispense a full supply of prescription medication
